The Double Man (Jack Widow Book 15) Page 27

Widow stopped dead center of the control room and looked around. He listened for the sound he was looking for and he found it. He dragged Voight out of the control room and into the hallway. He followed the sound of wind and rain. He pulled Voight room to room until he found the right one. He dragged Voight over to a room that was missing half the floor and the wall. All there was left was exposed rebar at one side of the room.

Voight struggled to speak and finally managed to get some words out. He said, “Wait. I can make you rich! I can cut you in!”

Widow hauled Voight up and held him out in front. He held him there and stared into his eyes. That evil look was gone and replaced with fear.

Voight talked some more, but Widow didn’t listen. He said nothing and dragged Voight to the edge and let go of his tie.

Widow stepped back and shot Voight twice in the gut. Voight stared at him in horror. He didn’t fall back, so Widow kicked him. Voight went flying back into the wind and the rain. Lightning flashed once far off in the distance, but just enough for Widow see Voight’s eyes one last time, and then he was gone. He fell three hundred feet to the ocean water.

None of them knew how to fly the Jayhawk, but that was okay because Keagan knew exactly how to use the CB radio. She called the US Coast Guard, and within forty minutes, they were surrounded by Jayhawk rescue helicopters. These had "United States Coast Guard" plastered on the sides. It looked like they sent their entire fleet of helicopters out to the oil rig, and just for four survivors.

The Ruffalo Oil and Gas company closed its doors forever the following month.

The FBI released Keagan’s unit with their apologies. They also dropped the old charges against James Ruffalo, but that made no difference to Ruffalo because he elected to keep the name Liddy.

Liddy and Tessa Garret started a new father-daughter relationship from scratch. She stayed in Alaska and got hired on to his business, where she would learn to help him run it.

Peter got arrested, but Liddy hired the best lawyers to help fight his case. He ended up with a five-year prison sentence. But Liddy promised to hold a job for him when he got out.

Keagan received accommodations for her bravery and police work. She found Widow’s paperback copy of Into the Wild that he left on her bookshelf in her office. From time to time, when she felt lonely, she would glance over at it and know he was out there somewhere.

Widow left town to avoid questions and to move on, as he always did. But before he left, he made one last stop in Kodiak. He stopped at the post office and bought the same postcard he had ruined on the oil rig. This time, he sent it to Sonya Gray’s home address in Virginia.

He signed it, From Widow. I’m back here again. Thinking of you.
